Sonnet Mondal (a twenty year old science student) publishes his poetry through cyberwit.net, who provide 'publishing services worldwide'. Here's a quote from their website: 'Poetry is something celestial, heavenly and God gifted. It enables and uplifts both its creator and readers. Through sublime poetry, a poet can reveal the spontaneous overflow of his emotions. In short, poetry has high and excellent seriousness. So, to enhance the poetic sensibilities, our group is publishing World poetry anthology.'

Ouch.

I found a newspaper article dated 2008 that said he was 17, and also gave his date of birth.

He's a very young poet who uses vanity presses. Maybe most chapbook publishers ARE vanity presses. I wouldn't know. I've only had my poetry published by publishers who've paid me, not the other way round.

The quoted text is woefully ungrammatical and badly written. The entire site is like that. Take a look.

If you want this youngster to be taken seriously as a poetry editor, give us some links to some of his poetry. Let's see what his writing is like and why he has to resort to vanity presses to get published. It's possible that he's phenomenally good. I have no way of knowing.

Any small press can nominate anything they like for the Pushcart Prize, so his nominations prove nothing.

Let's see his poetry.

Simplistic? I just followed a link to Sonnet's own website. This is one of the pieces posted there. I make no comment other to wonder why you want him as an editor, but I wish you all the best anyway.

Mankind

The Fence of customs around
me-
When through them I peep to see
To be free......
But it's mental only-----
Shoots too strong to uproot
the tree.
The Fence changes-
But not the senses.....
Complex yet unexpected---
Diverse yet connected!!
The Fence is no wood but
mind!!!!
And me none but
Mankind!!!!!!!!!!!!

haha Very Happy

Okay, choosing him because he's a past contributor is fair enough, but why he counts as international any more than I do is a mystery. My poetry has sold on nearly all continents now (not Antarctica, I must admit); ditto my novels.

We're all international now, shroomy. If you want to read a fabulously good poet who is Indian, read Nitoo Das. She's a lecturer in English at Delhi University and writes poetry that makes me want to tear my hair out in frustration at how weak my own writing is in comparison to hers.

My own personal view is that this lad writes competent but unoriginal poetry at his best, and abysmal tripe at his worst. That IS a personal view. You are clearly seeing something more in his work.

I wish he'd answered the person on one of those websites who asked why he was called 'Sonnet'.

Sengupta didn't write in English, but even in translation her poetry hits a nerve, as it should.

Sonnet's doesn't.

I knew a famous opera singer once. It doesn't make me a great singer, even though I'm a musician.

That name coincidence thing is the most impressive coincidence of all coincidences ever. Absolutely extraordinary. Why didn't my parents call me Sestina? Perfectly nice sounding name.

Since delph_ambi ruined this thread with poorly-researched remarks, I'm deleting all my remarks in it. Sonnet, for the record, has never used any vanity press--and has been published by 3 different publishers, not just Cyberwit.

delphís remarks are poorly-researched? Yet youíre the one who mysteriously erases all trace of your comments here. Right... Wink

By the way, I would argue that youíre both published by vanity presses (delph_ambi & shroomy) but you guys donít want to hear that so I wonít bother with my view of truth. Just because you donít pay doesnít mean itís not vanity. Cheers Cool
