Here's eight, in no particular sequence :

Irvine Welsh - Trainspotting
James Joyce - Dubliners
Mervyn Peake - Gormenghast
Kurt Vonnegut - Slaughterhouse 5
Anthony Burgess - A Clockwork Orange
Bram Stoker - Dracula
Hunter S. Thompson - The Rum Diaries
Phillip Jose Farmer - To Your Scattered Bodies Go

There; and no women authors.

Assuming we can just take fiction to the island I would take

If it’s eight :

North & South – Elizabeth Gaskell
Mrs Dalloway – Virginia Wolf
Persuasion – Jane Austen
Middlemarch – George Eliot
Madame Bovary – Gustave Flaubert
Women in Love – D. H. Lawrence
Of Human Bondage – W Somerset Maugham
Les Liasons Dangereuses – Choderlos de Laclos

If ten I’d add

South Riding – Winifred Holtby
Le Grand Meaulnes – Alain Fournier

I could take more and I haven't even thought about non-fiction Laughing

How to Be Good Nick Hornby
Trainspotting Irvine Welsh
Porno Irvine Welsh
The Vic Brown Trilogy Stan Barstow
The Time Travelers Wife- Audrey Niffenthingy
Case Histories Kate Atkinson
The Shellseekers (beach book)
Cool for Cats (can't remember her name and can't be arsed to go downstairs and look)

And I'd buy two at the airport.

Monica I'd join you in cheating for the Anne Tyler's, I like her.

I tried to read a couple of Pat Barker's, I should give them another go really, I couldn't get on with them.

Missy
Regeneration is the only Pat barker one I've really read, and I loved it.I've bought others but never got into them the same way.
Anne Tyler writes all the books I want to write but does it a million times better!!
