Ah I haven't done this either so here goes

Forum moniker
Snow White because when I had to think of a nickname a friend had just said I looked like her but my Snow White is a slightly opinionated post-feminist girlie girl.

ten years a secretary in the foreign office and then a shock move to the police! I'm the nice police. I've had people ask to be arrested by me

West Sussex village - paradise

I'm retired (nearly ten years ago - and no, I was fortunate enough to be able to retire early so I'm in the low sixties). I've always been interested in writing, and have a very critical eye, which I employed to good effect in business, publications and presentations included. I have to have things 'right'. I took up editing (I'm better at it than writing, but that doesn't stop me) and have prepared books for some small publishers, and some individuals, probably getting on for 50 or so to date, and recently moved into covers etc. My last book was completely prepared by me for the publisher, including the cover art (not as arty as delph's, I call myself the 'grandma moses' of book covers). So, enough eh?

I am opinionated and highly critical, but not half as blunt as I used to be.

Writing is my second career. I retired from teaching secondary school (Chemistry and Biology) in 1988, having started in creative writing at Cambridge U. during a sabbatical leave in 1971-72. Finally finished an M.A. in English at the University of Ottawa in 1983, at the age of 50.

What do you write? Short stories, poetry, maybe one day a novel or two.

What are your current writing goals? To continue this year the way it's started - I've written more in the past month than I did in 2008/9 combined.

When and why did you start writing? I honestly can't remember, it's been a part of my life forever. I took up writing regularly when it helped me deal with being an emotional teenager!

What's your best piece of writing advice? To just do it, and not even read over until you reach a major plot point. To stop worrying about what it sounds like, in other words. That's helped me loads!

What three luxuries would you take with you to a desert island?
One of those magic bookcases that always has something new to read in it.
Tea (it's an island on the milkman's route, right?)
With a nice cup of tea and a good book, I'm sorted!

What are your Top 5 Favourite:
Authors: Stephen King, Terry Pratchett, Robin Hobb, Douglas Coupland

Foods: I like all sorts, and get bored with eating the same thigs over and over. Fresh stuff is usually best - love spinach, tomato, avacado, chillis, seafood, proper mozzarella, and takeaways are brilliant for a treat.

Places? Fountains Abbey, North Yorkshire,
The sofa in my living room,
The Tyne Pub
London
And I miss the wide open spaces of America.
...I appreciate that that list reads as a contradiction!

What do you write?
Short stories (genre under development)

What are your current writing goals?
To write two shorts stories per month and participate in my writing course activities. Then, we'll see...

When and why did you start writing?
Before school. The urgency came from wanting to write letters. The reading was also important, as I was hungrier for what was in those books than my parents and grandparents could keep up reading to me.

What's your best piece of writing advice?
Confidence - enjoy the rollercoaster. But seriously, just write and see...

What three luxuries would you take with you to a desert island?
I'd rather not go there.

What are your Top 5 Favourite:
Films: I love world cinema. My absolute favourite is Emir Kusturicaís Underground.
Books: Iím slightly outdated and in catch-up mode, after the past six years studying psychology alongside a full-time job, and not much cheating on my course books... Past favourites are by Gunter Grass, Milan Kundera and Franz Kafka. Recently Iíve enjoyed Marina Lewyckaís A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian and at the moment Iím reading The Land of Green Plums by Herta Muller.
Foods: Where do I start? Iím very fussy, but still have hundreds of favourites. Especially where aubergines are involved.
Places: Mostly outdoors, when the weather is Ďjust rightí.

Which
a) animal Ė my dog: weíre both friendly, love food and have sensitive joints.
b) plant Ė thistle: wild, prickly (don't tread on me), and colourful.
c) piece of furniture Ė something custom made...
and d) piece of clothing Ė the whole range between tracksuit and evening dress.

Real name : Sallie Tams

Age :Old enough to be considering all the things I said I'd never do, like Botox.
Occupation : Management consultant, would like to say former mc but life and bills keep dragging me back to it. When I'm not working for money, I'm writing for anything anybody will pay me - chocolate & cheese especially.

Location : Right now I am back in rural Staffordshire, England having relatively recently moved back from very lengthy period in USA and Canada.

What do you write? In 2009 I finished the first draft of a full length novel. I thought I was writing a murder-mystery but in reality it is veering towards general fiction - at least it will after lengthy re-write. I back-burnered it in 2010 to concentrate on short fiction and am really enjoying it - I've had a modicum of success (if there were anything smaller than a modicum, that would be it) but more than enough rejection letters to be developing a carapace . Professionally I've written everything from face-on-the-keyboard ISO & procedure manuals to sermons.

What are your current writing goals? To end 2010 with 16 - 20 shorts which are worthy of an anthology.

When and why did you start writing? I can't remember maybe around five or six. Writing is like breathing, I have to do it.

What's your best piece of writing advice? Write it first, fix it later - if only I could follow my own advice.

What three luxuries would you take with you to a desert island?

Notebook
Dictionary
Knife

What are your Top 5 Favourite:
Films : La vie en rose, Casino Royale (Daniel Craig), Tombstone, Das Boot & Rebecca
Books : On Green Dolphin Street, Birdsong, Dreadnought (NF), Blind Assassin & The Woman in White
Foods : Chicken Bhuna, Greek Yoghurt, Peshwari Naan bread, Strawberries & Cheddar Cheese
Places? :Robin Hood's Bay, England; Lake District, England; Painted Desert, AZ; Vancouver Island, BC & NYC.
Which
a) animal: dog
b) plant: wisteria
c) piece of furniture: rocking chair
and d) piece of clothing
is most like you?: faded rugby shirt
