Name: A man called Valance

Age: 53

What are your current writing goals? Iím not chasing rainbows, but if I can continue improving and have some fun on the way, then Iíll follow my own star and see where it takes me.

When and why did you start writing? Six years ago, when the lure of a school reunion website swept aside my previous indifference to computers. Typing with one finger, I loved being able to breathe new life into old tales. That little flame of creativity flickered again. Since then I've enjoyed a meteoric rise to the peaks of obscurity.

Iím settled at another base now, but I followed a link here and liked what I saw, so here I am.

What do you write? Fiction and non-fiction, usually light hearted. Some might say light weight, but I put the effort in. I donít care for poetry, even though Iíve done the odd piece of jingle jangle verse. I just donít understand poetry, itís not my thing.

What's your best piece of writing advice? Donít let the fear of what you canít do stop you from showing what you can do.

What three luxuries would you take with you to a desert island? A rocking chair and a porch, so I could sit in the shade and spin yarns to a sleepy old hound dog that pretends it isnít listening.

What are your Top 5 Favourite films? Depending on the mood Iím in, Iíd pick any five from The Magnificent Seven; Zulu; Firecreek; The Vikings; Rio Bravo; Shenandoah; Casablanca; Planet of the Apes; The Sons of Katie Elder; Lawrence of Arabia; Jungle Book; The Maltese Falcon; Whistle down the Wind; The Man who ShotÖ

Is there one thing youíd particularly like to tell us?
No, though I did leave a little story here which I've since deleted. It was crap.

Hello, Eva. The cowboy thing is a piece of escapism that I lapse into sometimes. I'm just an old ham, really.

Thanks Donna and Flirty. I'll get around to participating soon.

Forum moniker : Joss

Real name :Joss Hayes (well, Jocelyn, but nobody ever calls me that any more)

Age : Vintage 1946 - a good year, most prolific ever in Britain

Occupation :Retired modern language teacher, wife, mother, ex-foster mother, and grandmother eight times over

Location : Middlesbrough, North-east England

What do you write? : Mostly short stories, but I have written three novellas, as yet un-published, two of them for children.

What are your current writing goals? : To do well in the Whittakers! Laughing

When and why did you start writing? : I've always written ever since I learned how, but really I began when a good friend of mine, a fellow teacher, was suspended for allegedly assaulting a child. The whole affair so distressed me I wrote a totally fictional novella about it. Incidentally, he was cleared, but has never worked in teaching again.

What's your best piece of writing advice?: Don't agonise over it - just get on with it.

What three luxuries would you take with you to a desert island?:Mattspop (my husband of 39 years), a magic laptop that would continue working on said desert island, my bed

What are your Top 5 Favourite:
Films : God knows. I'm not one for watching the same film over and over again, unlike my second daughter, who knows Bridget Jones off by heart.
Books : That depends entirely on when you ask me!
Foods : Fruit, vegetables and more fruit
Places? : The North York Moors, York, Williamsburg (Virginia), Arizona, too many other wonderful places to list.

As for animals : the best ones are wild. I love birds. Saw moose in Oregon last year. Fantastic!
Clothes should be functional and comfortable (scruffy?)
