On 27 January, my short story Fong Goo (don't ask) will be published in the Sunday People newspaper (a UK national newspaper), in the Love Sunday supplement.

That's the good news. In fact, it's doubly good news because Fong Goo (a humorous 1st contact yarn) is one of those stories I wrote years ago, have always had an affection for, and have never managed to get published.

Now the bad news. There's no remuneration except an opportunity to plug your latest book, your website, etc.

There's a discussion going on about this on the womagwriter site if you'd like to have a read.

The word limit does seem to be quite flexible. Fong Goo is 1650 words long, yet the word limit is tentatively 1500.

Congrats! But of course we writers die of exposure, so boo! to the Sunday People.

I used to make it a rule not to sub to non-paying markets, but if it's one with an ISBN or ISSN it's actually okay(ish), so I do nowadays, because at least you'll get ALCS payments if you remember to register the piece. As newspapers generally are not going to have an ISSN, I'd avoid them. I don't think plugging your website etc is going to garner any sales. I remember seeing an analysis of poetry books that were reviewed in the TLS, and the conclusion was that even that type of exposure wasn't going to help.
